This is one of those breakfasts that is perfect for when the fridge and cupboards are a little on the bare side (i.e. I really needed to go grocery shopping this weekend and never made it to the grocery store!) I usually dislike the idea of hot cereal for breakfast because, 1. it always strikes me as boring and not a complete meal and 2. it usually is eaten as something sweet like with milk and brown sugar and I just can’t do sweets early in the morning. So, like I said, this super simple recipe is stuff you probably already have at home. I used Irish oats for the cereal but you can do this with any type of hot cereal you choose. The 3 main ingredients to get that delicious bacon and eggs taste are liquid smoke, black pepper, and Kala Namak salt. If you aren’t already familiar with it, Kala Namak salt is what is going to give this dish a distinctive egg flavor. The liquid smoke and black pepper give it that wonderful pepper-crusted bacon taste.
The maple syrup is actually completely optional. I almost didn’t add it, but ended up drizzling it over the top and I thought it was the perfect complement to the smokiness and tasted exactly like breakfast should to me!
Ingredients: 3 Cups Water
Pinch of Sea Salt
1 Cup Irish Oats
2 tsp Kala Namak
2 Tbs Powdered Nutritional Yeast
Generous amount of Fresh-Ground Black Pepper
Fresh Chopped Herbs (optional)
1/2 tsp liquid smoke
1 Tbs Coconut Oil
Bring 3 cups of water and a pinch of sea salt to a boil then add in the Irish oats, Kala Namak, and nutritional yeast.
Cover and simmer for 20 minutes. Take off of the heat and stir in the black pepper, chopped herbs, liquid smoke, and coconut oil.
